Romania’s corporate register shrank again in July, extending a losing streak that has now erased a cumulative 16,115 net companies since it began.

The month closed with 11,049 new registrations against 12,079 firms that left the register through suspensions, dissolutions and deregistrations. The result was a net loss of 1,030 businesses — the eighth consecutive month in the red, a run that began in December 2025.

Romania’s business map did something in July that looks like a statistical error: not one of the country’s 42 county units registered more new firms than it did a year earlier. The best-performing county was Satu Mare, and even it shrank by 2.7%. The worst, Alba, lost three-quarters of its registrations in twelve months.

The national picture is brutal. Romania registered just 11,049 new businesses in July, down 27.16% from 15,168 a year earlier. Against those 11,049 entries, the register logged 12,079 exits — 6,458 deregistrations, 4,211 dissolutions and 1,410 suspensions. That is a net loss of 1,030 businesses in a single month, the eighth consecutive month the ledger has run negative, a streak that began in December 2025 and has now erased a cumulative 16,115 businesses.

Romania’s business register closed the May–July quarter 4,829 firms in the red. New registrations came in at 12,427 in May, 11,277 in June and 11,049 in July — 34,753 in total. Against that, 14,478 firms exited in May, 13,025 in June and 12,079 in July — 39,582 in total.

On its face, that looks like the crack in the foundation. The data says it is not.

Romania’s July business numbers look less like a broad-based economy and more like a narrowing bet on two industries. The country added just 11,049 new registrations, a collapse of 27.16% from a year earlier. Inside that shrinking total, transport and retail together accounted for 3,897 firms—or 35.3% of everything created in the month.

The concentration is not an accident of strong growth. Transport recorded 2,307 registrations and retail added 1,590. Retail’s 1,590 registrations still left it in second place, behind transport and ahead of professional services at 1,207. Last July, the same two sectors were 29.5% of a much larger registration base. The economy is not broadening; it is thinning out and leaning harder on fewer sectors.

The narrative that Romania’s provinces are finally catching up to the capital is a dangerous distraction. The truth is simpler and far worse: Bucharest is sinking, and it’s taking the whole country down with it.

In June 2026, Bucharest registered just 2,667 new businesses — its second-lowest monthly tally this year, barely edging out January’s 2,706. That represents a 25.5% collapse from the 3,578 businesses the capital managed in March, a mere three months ago.

The headline figure is terrifying enough: nearly 7,000 net businesses wiped out in just three months. But the real story is a structural decay that refuses to bottom out.

June’s registration data reveals an economy dangerously dependent on logistics and retail, while manufacturing and IT — the sectors that were supposed to power the future — barely register.

Romania’s business registration machine is running on fumes, and the fumes smell like diesel. The 11,277 new company registrations recorded in June represent the third consecutive month the country has failed to crack the 12,000 barrier, a threshold it routinely cleared as recently as March, when 14,438 new businesses were founded. That is a 22% collapse in just three months. And the 12-month moving average has now slipped to 13,248, its lowest inflection point in the rolling cycle.

Romania’s company registry delivered another chilling signal in June 2026, with just 11,277 new registrations — a 4.15% drop from the 11,765 recorded in June 2025. The figure places June 2026 at a mediocre 7th place out of the last 10 years — and the trajectory is unambiguously downward.

While a single weak month can be dismissed as noise, the pattern cannot. June 2026 marks the second consecutive June decline — and when you rank all Junes since 2017, the deterioration is unmistakable. June 2025 ranked 5th. June 2026 has already slipped to 7th. The 2025–2026 two-year pairing is now the worst back-to-back declining June pair since 2019–2020 — and that period coincided with a global pandemic that froze entire economies. There is no pandemic excuse this time.

The numbers keep getting worse, but the spin is getting better.

The headline net loss of 1,748 firms looks like an improvement over May’s catastrophic deficit of 2,051.

Don’t be fooled. This is not recovery. This is the rhythm of a patient bleeding more slowly between hemorrhages.

Romania’s business registration data for June 2026 reveals something far more unsettling than the headline 4.15% year-on-year decline would suggest. Beneath the surface of a merely “soft” month — total registrations of 11,277 against June’s historical mean of 12,119 — a structural fracture in the business landscape is becoming impossible to ignore.

The numbers that matter are these: Limited liability companies (SRL) fell to just 6,233 new registrations in June, the lowest monthly SRL count since January of last year. Meanwhile, individual sole traders (PFA) clung to a 40.2% share of all registrations — among the highest levels in the available record and barely below February’s all-time peak of 41.8%.
