Romanian Business Boom Continues: Transport and Logistics Lead September 2025 Surge
BUCHAREST - Romania’s business landscape showed remarkable vitality in September 2025, with company registrations surging 54.5% compared to the same period last year, driven primarily by explosive growth in transport and logistics sectors alongside continued strength in wholesale and retail trade.
The country recorded 14,810, up from 9,585. The data reveals a business ecosystem where new company formation continues to outpace business exits, with a net growth of 1,859 enterprises for the month.
Transport and Logistics: The Unstoppable Engine
The standout performer was the transport and storage sector, which saw 17,828 - a staggering 56.7% increase year-over-year. This sector now nearly matches wholesale and retail trade as Romania’s largest business category by registration volume.
“The transport boom reflects Romania’s strategic position in European supply chains and the continued expansion of e-commerce logistics networks,” noted economic analyst Maria Popescu. “We’re seeing everything from last-mile delivery services to cross-border freight operations registering at unprecedented rates.”
Wholesale and Retail Maintain Dominance
Despite the transport surge, wholesale and retail trade remained the largest sector with 18,223. The sector’s continued strength suggests robust consumer demand and the ongoing digital transformation of commerce.
Professional, scientific, and technical activities followed with 10,869 registrations, while construction maintained its position as a key economic driver with 10,513 new businesses.
Regional Hotspots: Beyond Bucharest
The growth wasn’t concentrated solely in the capital. While Bucharest led with 3,366 registrations (up 50.5% year-over-year),,. These patterns suggest business formation is spreading beyond traditional economic centers.
“The regional diversification is particularly encouraging,” Popescu observed. “We’re seeing strong growth in counties like Iași (64.2% increase) and Cluj (62.7%), indicating that Romania’s economic development is becoming more geographically balanced.”
Business Entity Trends: PFA Explosion
The data reveals significant shifts in preferred business structures. Individual enterprises (PFA) showed the most dramatic growth, increasing 117.5% year-over-year to 4,938. This suggests a growing preference for flexible, individual business models, particularly in service sectors.
Limited liability companies (SRL) remained the dominant form with 9,343 registrations, up 33.9% from September 2024.
Sector Challenges and Declines
While most sectors showed growth, agriculture, forestry,, dropping to 1,802 businesses. This contraction may reflect ongoing challenges in agricultural markets and changing rural economic patterns.
The data also shows some sector classification changes between 2024 and 2025, with several categories showing 100% declines due to reclassification rather than actual business contraction.
Ecosystem Health: Positive Momentum
The overall business ecosystem remains healthy,. This positive momentum suggests sustained economic confidence among Romanian entrepreneurs.
“The consistent net growth across multiple sectors and regions indicates a resilient business environment,” Popescu concluded. “While we’re seeing some sectoral shifts, the overall picture is one of dynamic entrepreneurship and economic adaptation.”
The September 2025 data continues a trend of robust business formation that has characterized Romania’s post-pandemic recovery, with transport and logistics emerging as the new frontier of entrepreneurial activity alongside the traditional strengths of trade and professional services.
